For anybody who still has Lords of Magic: Special Edition and is looking to play it comfortably on a new and faster system, here are two patches that will solve many of the issues you may have encountered:
The official 3.01 patch, which fixes some pretty serious bugs with the Special Buildings and dungeons, and in the Legends of Urak quests.
The unofficial 3.02 patch. This patch requires that 3.01 be installed first. Just extract the .rar file to your LOM:SE directory and overwrite if prompted.
3.02 contains some very useful game options, including local scroll speed control, and the ability to turn off the stronghold and military building dialogues. While there is no easy fix for the very tiny game screen resolution, you can mitigate this by setting your desktop resolution to 1024x768 before booting the game, then switching back to your normal resolution when finished.
Note: these two patches work best if you have an official CD copy of the game fully installed. From my experience, I can play the game on Vista Home Basic with no issues, and not even running in compatibility mode.
